(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - English TV personality Simon Cowell became famous in the United States for his blunt mouth and his eye for talent on "American Idol."

Cowell, who has served as a judge on FOX's "Idol" since it premiered in 2006, said his goodbyes Wednesday evening when the series' ninth season concluded. According to the New York Times , many credit the "caustic, cocky"; judge with making "Idol" into such a success.

Critics are asking whether the show will still be compelling when he goes.

According to the Times, his 2003 autobiography shared his recollection that his first rude insult came when he was 4. He looked at his mom on Christmas, specifically at her furry hat, and said, "Mum, you look like a poodle."

He would go on to share that caustic nature with the contestants and the viewing public.

Some of his most famous quotes, listed by The Times of London , include:

* You should sue your singing teacher.

* I presume there was no mirror in your dressing room tonight.

* The end of the animal trade would leave more time to trap or beat to death pop star wannabes.

* Did you really believe you could become the "American Idol"? Well, then, you're deaf."

* You have just invented a new form of torture.

* If you had lived 2,000 years ago and sung like that, I think they would have stoned you.

* You have the personality of a handle.

* The look, it was something out of the "Addams Family."

* You were having fun. I'm not sure how much fun everyone at home was having.

* You came across as a background singer for a background singer.

* You sounded like Cher after she's been to the dentist.

* You were fabulous but it was the singing that was slightly off-putting.

Here's more, shared by "Extra" :

* If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning.

* It was almost like you were giving birth up there at the end.

* Frank (Sinatra) was the king of cool. If he was a lion, you were a mouse.

* My advice would be if you want to pursue a career in the music business, don't.

* You sounded like Dolly Parton on helium.

Another, quote, shared by the New York Times, was, "There are only so many words I can drag out of my vocabulary to say how awful that was."

Cowell will soon serve as a judge and producer for an American version of the talent show "The X Factor." As far as who will assume his judging duties on "Idol," well, stay tuned.
