Romanian Residents Amused By Drunken Pedestrian Sign

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Residents in the western Romanian town of Pecica are finding the newly erected drunken pedestrian signs quite amusing reports The Telegraph .

The signs are bright red and show a picture of a person crawling on their knees while holding a glass in one hand. The sign reads "Attention – Drunks" beneath the picture.(See a photo of the sign.)

Pecica Mayor Peter Antal came up with the idea after visiting a small German town that had put up similar signs.

Officials began dealing with a rise in accidents in town caused by drunken pedestrians and were looking for a way to bring that number down. Some of the accidents included fatalities reports the Telegraph .

Pecica is a border town that deals with heavy and frequent traffic. Antal says that the town has a 'vibrant" nightlife and that pedestrians get to a point of being unaware. By making drivers more aware with these new signs, he hopes it will help prevent future accidents.

Antal said, "We have thought about different options (on how) we can stop this and we decided that first step was to mount these signs. We must warn drivers that sometimes people who have little control over their actions can suddenly appear in the road."

According to the Telegraph , although residents find humor in the new signs, others see the signs as sending a wrong message. Antal believes they are a "positive contribution."

Odd road signs pop up in random places.

A New York Times travel article states that when traveling through Oklahoma, right before entering the town of Boley, a sign reads "Hitchhikers May Be Escaped Inmates."

A minimal security correctional facility is nearby and the sign was put up to warn drivers – just in case.
